1. хоть зарежь не понимаю, не помню, не знаю, не верю, не сделаю и т.п. [used with negated verbs in the 1st pers; when the idiom is used with verbs in the 2nd pers, they usu. occur in the pfv fut (не поймёшь etc) and have a generic meaning]

⇒ one absolutely cannot (understand, remember, believe etc sth.), one absolutely does not (have any knowledge of sth.), or one absolutely will not (do sth.):

- (even) if my (his etc) life depended on it;

- for the life of me (him etc);

- [1st pers only](I'll be) damned if I (know <can etc>);

- I'm (I'll be) hanged if...

     ♦ "Бывало, он приводил к нам в крепость баранов и продавал дёшево, только никогда не торговался: что запросит, давай, - хоть зарежь, не уступит" (Лермонтов 1). "Occasionally he brought rams to us at the fort and sold them cheap, but he never bargained, you had to pay him what he asked, he would never cut a price even if his life depended on it" (1b).

     ♦ [Лебедев:] Или я отупел от старости, или все вы очень уж умны стали, а только я, хоть зарежьте, ничего не понимаю (Чехов 4). [L ] Either I m old and dotty, or else you've all grown far too clever Anyway, I'm hanged if I can make it out (4b).

2. нужен, необходим и т.п. - a person or thing is very much (needed):

- desperately;

- (very) badly;

- in the worst way.

     ♦ "...Ты должен мне дать три тысячи взаймы. Нужны, брат, хоть зарежь!" (Гоголь 3). " . You must lend me three thousand rubles. I need the money desperately" (3c).
